by Rebecca Bedrossian
The winners of our 52nd Photography Competition are now online! As to what you’ll see, Leslie dela Vega, director of photography at Fast Company, says, “What I saw in two days [of judging]…
conceptual, more graphic, thought-provoking imagery.”
One hundred and sixty-five projects selected from 5,500 entries—no small feat for the judges. Photographer Mimi Haddon notes that during the judging, “There were many moments of strange…

Archway’s Sing for Hope Piano Is… Cozier Than Most
At last Wednesday’s public performance on the DUMBO Archway’s pop-up Sing for Hope piano, both the instrument and the musician were outfitted in a crochet suit.
Prize-winning pianist Elaine Kwon (who lives on the Upper West Side but “loves” Brooklyn), gave a mid-morning performace under the Archway in head-to-toe crochet on the hard-to-miss piano designed by Olek, the South Slope-based Polish crochet artist.
The piano is one of 88 across the city — the same number of keys found…

In fact, the festival opened with Midnight in Paris by Brooklyn native Woody Allen. This was not the first time an Allen film opened the festival; his comedy…

In the streets I had repeatedly heard many Cubans commenting on the weather with the expression: “¡Que calor!” as they rapidly fanned themselves with a paper fan, a piece of cardboard, or anything else that was flat and could be used to move the… Continue
