but Bergson didn`t think about Surrealism nor Freud. But as Cezanne placed phylosophical themes in the center as a drive, how long can you look at a stone and not been declared mad, or at mount Victory and thinking about the relativity of form and colors. Photografie was invented, are we painter artists ore oldfashioned artisans --- and than came the brake of the second world war and abstract art and surrealistic art became the expression of freedom and humanismn in oposition to the official arts in Germany, Italy, Russia, China.....and now after after after the unthoughtthrough avalenches of mostly so called wordly justifications in diletant imitations of philosophy that announces impotant art pieces or follow them are shamefull ridicule. Art historian are Art Historian and mostly are coming after the artist^s creations.

thanks for reminding us of henri's theoretical contributions to surrealism it took me a few minutes of googling to find this article where the connection is made

http://www.bookninja.com/?page_id=4209

I have always struggled with the desert pilgrimages of art theory

the writing so dense you need a matchbook cover to parse the writers vegetation from the bones of academia

the surrealist manifestos were and are delightful corruptions of reason

Bergson`s creativ impuls made the wires hopp wireless and automatic writing was aknowledged. He lived in France and drank wine, so they say. Breton a gallic Kelt lived in France too and also drank wine, but he had not purchaised slices of Jesus on Toast on ebay.
Freud lived mostly in Vienna and smoked cigarres or pipes and drank some coffey, but not so much than Balsac who did not smoke cigarres and did not eat meet and no slices of Jesus for breakfast.
Dali heard about him and others too and started to illustrate dreams and got attention.
But Picasso was by definition as surreal as any other abstract artist.
We are not suposed to be creatif , the scientist can`t find what it is. But art does not exist without any others ear, or eye, or nose, or understaning, so let`s hopp together, said the rabbit to the porcyupaine. (an old greque saying).

linear history informs us that the dada chicken came first

that said, your postulate is well informed for those of us who have read between the lines where all the good stuff waits

the surrealists laid several manifestos I had one for breakfast this morning with a slice of jesus toast that I purchased on ebay

surrealist art came after surrealist poetry which in turn emerged from dada's broken bones

the men and women of surrealism broke every rule in the book without the help of recreational drugs though a bottle of wine here and there was never far out of reach

surrealism dared to discover the marvelous

a crime for which they can never be forgiven
