Acrylic, ink and gold leaf on canvasI did this piece when I began searching for the higher power. It's about my child inside tripping over itself trying to reach some kind of understanding of that concept.
How often are you the first among your friends to try something new?
All the time
What do you want people to know most about you?
I'm never totally sure what my art is about. I get an image in my head first and then try to understand what it means. It's always a reflection of something that is happening in my life at the moment. Heart break, family troubles, disease, death, etc. My current work seems to a be a blend of recovery from alcohol, looking for a place where I fit in and gender confusion/fascination. Since becoming sober, I've been spending a lot of time at drag shows, it's something new to me and really interesting to watch. I've always been completely fascinated by that world, but was too scared to explore it. The lines of gender and sexuality seem to dissolve and expression of your true self is encouraged and that is what I love about it, having always felt like a weirdo myself. I feel that I relate to the struggles and criticisms transgender or gay people in general have to face from the straight and narrow world. They'll always be my people who I love, celebrate and will defend no matter what.
