Select Media Festival at Co-Prosperity Sphere in Chicago--art show and sale

I have Arab artist friends who use Arabic calligraphy as abstract or non literative imagery and I've been rather sceptical of that form precisely because as a non-Arabic reader, I will never know (without third party guidance) whether what I see has literal meaning or not. Michael Jacobson's terms 'asemic' and 'relative asemic' help, but only half help - definitions being good and a straightjacket at the same time.
