Artist's Statement

Life is a series of images and narratives, woven together to create an individual’s story. My work aims to spark an original story in each and every viewer. I want them to turn to someone and say, “You know, this reminds me of…”

As a child, I loved storybooks and listening to stories. This fascination with stories, along with my passion for painting, have both stuck with me into adulthood. Drawing on this love of storybooks, I employ unexpected perspectives, humorously exaggerated expressions, and vibrant colors to create a whimsical narrative feel in my work.

Being a woman of few eloquent words, I let my work tell my unique views with a youthful perspective. Not wanting to shout my beliefs from my soapbox, I use curiously quirky characters to buffer my pieces’ meanings so they’re not “Bam” in your face”, but more an internal conversation starter.

Each of my figures evokes a strong emotional connection with the viewer. These connections are key to drawing out the viewer’s personal thoughts and perspectives.

My work allows the viewer to layer their narratives with my own, creating a personally unique tale. This act of the viewer taking an artist’s image imagery and making it their own by imposing their own story on the image is to me what my art making is all about. Drawing out one’s own inner emotions, thoughts, views, feelings - allowing them to tell their story.
