Liberia: Long Story Bit by Bit
Tim Hetherington
May 1 - June 26 2009
June 4th 6-8pm Opening and Book Launch
Liberia: Long Story Bit by Bit brings to life an extraordinary range of characters-from warlords to presidents, environmental activists to traditional hunters, political hustlers to democratic visionaries. During this time Hetherington became preoccupied with the dynamics of power: from the raw power wielded by the young men of rebel groups to the corrupt power of the transitional government to the possibilities of a democratically elected president. This exhibition and book brings names and faces to news headlines, and in doing so demonstrates that what happened in Liberia was not the product of inexplicable and random chaos.

Fish-Work: Sea Stories
Corey Arnold
Through July 24, 2009
Shortly before he picked up a camera, Corey Arnold went to work as a deckhand for commercial fishermen in Alaska. The photographs and texts in this exhibition are based upon his experiences aboard crabbing and fishing vessels in the rugged waters off Alaska and Arctic Norway. "I know how fish think," says Arnold, "and the smell of the sea and motion of the boat are part of me." Such intimacy yields a portrait of the sea that is by turns harrowing and humorous, where men fight waves 40 feet high, and a single mistake handling a 700-pound crab pot can mean injury or death.

Press Play concert series presents Cinema16
June 4, doors at 6, performance at 7
Doors open at 6pm for a free beer tasting sponsored by Kelso of Brooklyn & delicious treats from Sweet Tooth of the Tiger on sale.
Cinema 16 recreates the experience of the silent film era, as curator Molly Surno programs obscure vintage films and pairs them with contemporary New York musicians. Bands are given one month to compose a musical score in order to modernize the tradition of live music accompanying films during the 1920s. For this incarnation of Cinema 16, Nick Yulman & the Bone Conductor Mechanical score three films: Georges Méliès magical short L'homme orchestre (One Man Band), Charles Bowers's long lost comical romp A Wild Roomer, and Maya Deren's surrealist masterpiece Meshes of the Afternoon.

'From Des Moines to D.C., an inside look at the 2009 U.S. Presidential Election'
June 4th 2009 - One Night Only
As a group of five artists and photojournalists following the 2009 presidential race not only were we living, traveling and working together we were witnesses to an historic and momentous chapter in our country's history.  During this time we took a break from traditional ideas of photojournalism and searched for images that were often overlooked, focusing not only on the candidates, but the faces in the crowds, the hangers on, the staffers, the rallies, the secret service and the just plain odd.
