yeah it's a popularity contest. and while i can gently let my friends and family know that i'm in a contest, i don't feel good about going around soliciting votes based on the fact that someone knows me. just seems dishonest. marketing is what it is and i'm a big fan of it, but i'm also a big fan of art being judged on its own merits, and not based on the fact that a cute girl flashed a smile and got 1475 men to think for an instant that they stood a chance with her if they voted...for example. not that that happened, just an example of something theoretically that could happen. if my artwork sucks it shouldn't win because i have more friends. and likewise, a person with amazing artwork and NO friends shouldn't be penalized. so that's what somehow has to be resolved in future competitions. maybe juried. i don't know, even on a giant scale like American Idol, one is still going to try to have their friends vote for him/her. I suppose that's inevitable. so i don't have the answer right now, but i'm more than willing to work on it for the purposes of having an honest competition.

Hi guys, thanks for all the feedback, we really appreciate it. You raise some great points, and we do have some kinks to work through. The Best of 2008 was meant to be a "people's choice" project, but as you pointed out, there were some drawbacks to that approach. This included a bug that listed more than one piece for some of the artists in the top 50 list on Friday. We've corrected the script and the final list will be announced on Monday.

As a way to continue this conversation, and have your voice help shape how we structure competitions going forward, we've set up a feedback discussion group at: http://www.brooklynartproject.com/forum/topics/community-competitio... I invite each of you to share your thoughts and opinions.

We've also set up a General BAP Feedback and Recommendations discussion where you can share your ideas about anything across the board: http://www.brooklynartproject.com/forum/topics/general-bap-feedback...

It's our member's talent and passion that has allowed BAP to grow into such a unique and interesting community, and it's your voice that will form it's future. Thank you guys again for all the feedback, we value it immensely.

Best,
Anthony

I'll chime in here about the voting process, etc in this contest and the remarks of Moinka and Jaap.. Some people happen to have lots of friends. Some people like myself don't (I am happy that way) but the thing that bugged me is that, and I guess I didn't read the instructions well, to vote for an artist, you had to sign up and become a member of BA first. Once I found that out, I lost my enthusiasm. I guess I'm not much of a salesman. Just my two cents. I think all of the artists on this site are greatly talented and I get inspiration from them all.

I think Jaap is right and I also think there should be a jury a professional people to choose the winners...because in this system, you can ask all your friends to vot. This system isn't the right one. There should always be a jury. Voting for friends is OK, but it harms the better works...

Ian Reid asked a good question - see below. Did I blink and miss the answer or was none forthcoming? Please advise BAP!.

Dear follow artist:

Besides being part of the Brooklyn Best 2008, I am also in a competition at a different website: www.barebrush.com. It will be greatly appreciated if you could take a minute to vote for me. Please go to the above website and click on VOTE. Then scroll to the right of the screen until you will see numbers from 1 through 31. My painting is number 22. Please click on number 22 and VOTE. Thank you all, maybe one day I can return the favor.
