Idea for group: Do you have any rituals when it comes to making your art?
I have had the fortune of meeting many artist along my way. After we get over- What medium do you work in? and Are you showing? often I feel there is a lack of easy conversational inquires that are intelligent.
Then I met this young artist, who asked me -Do you have any rituals when you work?
Caught off guard, I just responded, "Do you?"
She said that she had read an article about artist rituals. She came across a guy who lit a candle when he arrived to his art space, and then lit incense and then cleaned for a half hour before starting. He scrubbed the floors every time on his hands and knees. The young woman then said: So I tried it just to see, and it really helped. "
"Helped how?" I asked.
"Getting centered. All the time your cleaning you are thinking about what your going to do. And then when you start working, everything is clean and in order." Then she asked again: "Do you have any rituals when you work?"
At the time I was unaware if I has any rituals, I thought not, I thought I just started working. I think a lot of artist share in this self perception of how they go about working. In this group I wan to inquire about other ritual people use in their art making. And to take it a step further by asking the willing, to try some of these ideas and report back your perceptions.

My work is all about process: combing the streets for objects to work on or with, playing with "random junk" like a puzzle to see which pieces fit into each other...mixed media brings together facets of my neighborhood together with my own flights of fancy. http://www.wix.com/nicokwanart/home

I have a few rituals--I don't feel right until I light a candle and/or incense placed on a little table before a goddess image, and ask her to help me see etc.
That's the relief--it relieves me from focusing on myself as the source--and removes the overly critical voice from my head. I am open to receive.
This all may sound too spiritual to you here. I'm an American and I have lived in a few different Asian countries, where it is openly acceptable to do and believe such things--whereas this may make Americans(Westerners) a bit nervous or embarrassed...

Well,i have a few. one is painting while seein a movie or cartoons,always with a bottle of coke zero or Light Coke and cigarets.The other is in absolute silence. The other is with music and cartoons on mute or only music,sometimes with only 1 lamp on making candle's ilumination in my room.I often burn incense in my room to give me a good feeling of relaxation and balance energy
