I bought some gamblin, thinking it would be better than utrecht, golden, but cheaper than windsor etc. the titanium and zinc are virtually see through.

ummmm...rembrandt. oh you said affordable. windsor and newton aren't bad
Schmincke Mussini Opaque White hardly qualifies as affordable, but in my opinion it's so superior, in every way, to any other white on the market, it's well worth the extra bucks.
fww.
I work at an art supply here in Seattle called Daniel Smith, We have some great oil paint, you should check it out, its inexpensive too,we make it here in Seattle, lots of pigment in it.

Make it yourself, very easy, get linseed oil, titanium dioxide and lithopone, 30 or 40 %. Mix 10-15% titan with the rest lithopone and as much oil as you need to get a nice consistency. Use a putty knife to get the lumps out: finished!
Have you tried Windsor and Newtons WINTON range? - cheaper than others but still very good quality. Their Titanium White is very good.
thanks to all for the replies! wish i had the space to make my own.......
