Question? I love New York but all artists from every walk of life come out here to chill out and be known. Great. But now as I get older I'm looking for a new atmosphere - a new city where there are artists and hipsters to be around. What's a good a city or state to be in and to broading my horizions.

I know this thread is a little bit old, but I'm totally surprised no one has mentioned Providence. It has a huge, but close knit and thriving artist and music community, it's a small city so it's super easy to get around and you can get to the beach, the woods, the whatever type of landscape/day out you want, it's still really close to New York and Boston, it's super cheap ($300 on average for a room), tons of stuff going on all the time, really good food, bars, nightlife, warehouse shows, etc. There are many established artist communities and resources like AS220 which has a community print shop, darkrooms, gallery and show space, artist residences, RISD is there and has a lot of great programs and feeds a lot of artists into the community. It's a downright gorgeous and historic city. The economy has hit it hard and there aren't many full time jobs for artists, but what most people actually do is they have part time or full time jobs either related or somewhat related to their own art work, or they have a part time job completely unrelated (i.e. cafe, wholefoods, record store, etc) and then because living is so cheap and easy they spend the rest of the time working on their own work and having a ridiculous amount of fun. It's leisure time city. Once I'm sick of New York or milked as much as I can or want from my career here, whenever that happens I almost certainly will return to Providence.

My hometown is also Northampton, Massachusetts which usually wins some award from somewhere as being the best small city for the arts or something every year. Northampton is also a great city, very tiny, a lot of artists, autors, actors, big creative community. Many people live in Northampton and New York City simultaneously. For me it's a little pricey, I think if you live near downtown Northampton your rent could very well be close to what you pay in New York although you'd probably have much more space. There's a ton of musicians touring through constantly and you drive 15 minutes in any direction and you'll hit farmland. It really is a great little city, very laid back, beautiful in and of itself and surrounded by more beautiful towns and cities, a lot of universities and super, SUPER liberal.

Ausin Texas is incredible, can't go wrong in Philly and I'm learning more about DC. I have pics and lot to tell........

As soon as I get my pictures off my damn phone.

Maybe Berlin
