The best cities for artist other than New York??

i'm gonna throw minneapolis/st paul out there....2 very different vibes in two cities that have approachability, affordability and an open minded demographic....don't listen to the 'long winters and cold' argument- thanx to global warming the winters there are bearable but you do have to like the seasons

I've lived in New York...no place like it, great opportunities but the cost of living can eat all of your time. I live in San Antonio, Texas now. It lacks the immediate glamour and grit of NY, however the grass roots arts scene here is vibrant....you just have to seek it. My career has done well here...I have more time and space to make art. I think the best situation is to live part of the year in an economical place like SA and the rest of the year in a city like NY or LA where you can meet curators and other artists. I'm still working on that. As for Europe...just returned from Berlin...it's hopping, edgy, and cheap studio spaces...no jobs though. (Another benefit of living in cheaper areas are extra funds for travel.) Really liked the comment about imaginary cities...I think Calvino had a point. is a good site to check out the Texas art scene.

New York is New York, Miami is Miami, but if you wish to know where Art is really appreciated...one must absolutley consider the thriving Art Mecca of Warren, Ohio! We got the FUCT Arts Council and the famous Flea Market on the Square. If you enjoy a cup of coffee while working on your next masterpiece, then The Mocha House is the right place for you! This quaint coffeehouse is known for it's fine selection of New York style cheesecake...and it's where you can rub elbows with the social elite, or sit back and make fun of them with the area's premier Artists.

Interesting topic- always on my mind! I would like to throw Berlin into the mix. Wow, it has such strong flavor, such history and is deeply rooted in the "Artist mentality".
I myself am near San Francisco, and we are all impressed with New York! You should make some time to travel and see what fits your style! Good luck, let us know. Sargam

Or course, it depends on your personal characteristics and what you're looking for....In the present day, almost anyone can work from anywhere on Earth with solid internet connectivity. With that said, think outside of the box. Perhaps it might be interesting to find a place with a rapidly growing or emerging art world. I'm generally bullish on Latin America, Asia, and Australia. People seem thirstiest for art and wine in Asia. The region also boasts some of the highest rates of personal savings and disposable income in the world, so it's a prime target for westerners looking to export culture. I'm neutral on the EU markets, but always very bullish on the culture and government subsidies for artists. I'm generally bearish on the US and North America.

If you are:

-- like the "typical" (?) person running around NYC and want to be in a bustling hub city, maybe you should try Berlin. Markets in Asia are doing better than in the west, so, with various "cultural development projects" underway, Hong Kong could be your gateway to the entire region, especially mainland China's booming market. The metropolitan Shanghai market has more "viable" target consumers than all of Canada. Seoul seems to have some sou, but I'm still too unfamiliar to certainly recommend it to anyone. Singapore has potential, but is better for corporations than artists, plus they might chop your hands off for smoking or "trafficking" a little joint

-- "semi-adventurous" and want to live sustainably in a place with a lower cost of living, consider Buenos Aires (no shortage of amazing loft spaces and soaring architecture), Rio de Janeiro, or Sao Paulo, Madrid, and Vancouver BC....Australia fascinates me, but I'm still relatively unfamiliar with the region.

-- the type of person who want to "chill out, focus, live adventure, and don't mind being a little off of the beaten path," a few places that have recently caught my attention are Guayaquil, Cuenca & Montanita (be sure to listen to the live music at 1:39 in the video!!)(Ecuador), Idyllwild (California), and

I'm going to add my hometown Bridgeport, CT because it's trying to be a place for artists, I'm begining to find cheap studios and it's 45 minutes away from New York. I find New York over rated anyway but it's a beautiful and productive city.
