Event Description

The Medgar Evers College Art Committee (MECAC), in collaboration with the Dorsey Art Club of Dorsey’s Art Gallery in Brooklyn, proudly present the Prints of the Masters art exhibit in tribute to the late Lawrence Peter Dorsey. The exhibit will run from February 3 to March 10, 2011 at Academic Building (AB1) - 1638 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, New York 11225. An Opening Reception and Artist’s discussion will be held on February 3, 2011 from 5 pm to 10 pm  at the same venue. These events are free and  open to the public.

“The Medgar Evers College Art Committee is proud to commemorate Black History Month with this exciting, exhibit that features over four decades of the African diaspora artistic expression,” said committee member Izell Glover.  The exhibit comprises approximately sixty prints by African American grandmasters  – both past and present – including works from the late Romare Bearden, whom the New York Times called "one of America's pre-eminent artists" and Jacob Lawrence, whose work garnered a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of Art.

These pre- and post - Harlem Renaissance prints hail from galleries and private collections from across the globe. Medgar Evers College President, William L. Pollard, personally loaned, from his private collection, a valuable print of “Wash Day” (pictured) – by seminal folk artist Clementine Hunter whose works depicts the beauty of everyday Southern plantation life. The College has long embraced the fine arts: hosting numerous art exhibits on campus and boasting several fine artists amongst its faculty and student body. Some of these artists, skilled in diverse mediums from sculpture to oil painting, have exhibited in galleries across the country and have garnered prestigious awards and accolades.
