Takuro Hinokio - GOKUSAI ~Gorgeously coloured~
Takuro Hinokio travels through his own hidden spiritual world, which is dense, odd, and gloomy. His artworks are produced through this journey, extracting the powerful visual image to the real world.
Born in Okayama in 1979, Takuro was a child who rather played by himself and often hid himself in a reverie. Okayama where he spent his youth, has deep mountains, beautiful rivers, and old shrines. The nature of the land was deeply connected with faith in the spirits, the ancient animism, where one can still feel the presence of goblins and specters. In this environment he nurtured his imaginations and found joys in drawing the invisible world.
He started to study drawings full-bore in the professional school where he encountered with surrealism, the visions and philosophy of which affected him deeply.“Dreams, illusions and fantasies are all part of the real world.”
This word clung to him like the missing piece of the puzzle, and he thought it described his art more articulately than any other words. Around that time, he also encountered with the works of Jan Švankmajer, a Czech animation creator, which gave him strong impressions and great inspirations. In 2000 he moved to Tokyo by himself out of the pure desire wanting more people to see and touch his artworks.
Takuro studiously produces his new works and throws one-man exhibi- tions regularly. His works are not limited to drawings, he also creates installations and often performs live paintings, and creation of a massive batik in the public. He is not hesitant to expand his art fields and tries many new things.
In 2007, he visited Prague, the Czech Republic to see the roots of Jan Švankmajer. In 2012, he took part in the art festival Burning Man, where he could actually feel people really appreciating and enjoying the art and be liberated spiritually by the encounters with the art. It was a great experience for him.
Takuro Hinokio’s journey will never stop, as long as his curiosity and exploring spirit continues to well up.
