PRESS RELEASE

On the surface Matt Lopez's work conveys rich textures and bright, fluorescent colors. Using a variety of mediums such as spray paint, oils, acrylics, and found objects of an ephemeral nature, he creates work that has no separation between art and life, the supernatural, the spiritual and the real. Painting and objects become homogeneous and color is used almost superfluously. We are reminded of the interconnectivity of all things in nature and the world. The works explain apparitions of a time that has passed, and has yet to come where present and future co-exist on one single time line. Look beyond the fresh and vivid colors and the beautifully effervescent use of mixed media and you will see the artist's intention: a sacrifice , a homage, a salute to the pre-code hollywood era. The razzle-dazzle, the triumphs, and the controversy, are all encoded in the language of abstraction, installation, pop art, and graffiti art. Lopez, a Native American, is bound by his history, love of his spiritual and mythological upbringing all encompassed by the vast desert of New Mexico- a connection to place that is utterly influential in his work. In his latest exhibition ' Chant Down Babylon' Lopez invites you into his world and what a world it is.

Matt Lopez has obtained a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003, he has exhibited extensively across the U.S in solo and group exhibitions, he has been the recipient of several art awards during his career and more recently awarded the New York Studio Program Scholarship and took part in the NARS foundation in Brooklyn. Lopez now lives and works in New York. The exhibition at 66 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, will continue through 24 October 2009.
