This year Gülay Alpay will par tic i pate in the New York Pool Art Fair on March 4–6, 2011. Pool is an exhil a rat ing and hot art fair whose main pur pose is to cre ate a meet ing ground for out stand ing unrep resented artists and the large pub lic of con tem po rary art pro fes sion als. The fair serves as an invalu able resource for the artis tic com mu nity and the gen eral pub lic. On view will be Gülay Alpay’s sig na ture environ men tal instal la tions that are inter ac tive, par tic i pa tory, and provoca tive. Gülay’s work cre ates a platform where view ers are not merely pas sive spec ta tors, but rather they are engaged par tic i pants inter acting with a given space and con text, infus ing the event with the vital ity of human com mu ni ca tion. With spon tane ity and wit, Alpay evokes a range of the o ret i cal posi tions from body issues to psychoanalysis.
Alpay’s work fur thers a legacy of per fo ma tive work ref er enc ing such artists as Valie Export and Marina Abramovic. She updates this work by infus ing it with con tem po rary post-modern the ory. She effec tively high lights what Nico las Bor ri ard calls “the con tem po rary artis tic prac tice, a place that resides in the inven tion of rela tions between con scious ness.” Alpay seeks an inter ven tion that cre ates com mu nity closing the gap between viewer and artist. A moral and spir i tual endeavor, Alpay becomes part of the audience shar ing in equal author ship of the art event.
For Alpay, each artis tic act is a cre ative and trans for ma tive rit u al is tic expe ri ence. For every ges ture that she takes – from apply ing paint to silk, to paint ing her own body – are spir i tual acts of rebirth, expressions of love for human ity. Chal leng ing the bound aries of the art world, she stretches her own imag i nation and ours, to envi sion another kind of world where peo ple inter act freely and openly in love and companionship.
