Vaydra Wright’s digital collages utilize layers of color and pattern to create surreal compositions responding to psychological stresses endured by the artist. Created as coping strategies, these works are visual documents of the sensations the artist feels during periods of dissociation, a psychological condition in which one detaches from reality in response to traumatic events and triggering stimuli. The spiraling, inverted, kaleidoscopic works often function as Rorschach tests and represent the psychological repercussion of trauma through digitally manipulated abstractions. Working in complete isolation and without formal training, Vaydra’s works are entirely personal depictions of her unique experiences.
In her works titled A Kaleidoscope View of Inner City Buildings and Barren Landscape, Vaydra layers geometrical grids and architectural geometries with rippling reflections, the imagery mirrored into infinity to create compositions that are at once claustrophobic and expanding, binding and limitless. Original Bug Series features illusionistic shapes leaping from the picture plane, while Reflection of My Stolen Childhood captures dueling sensations of balance and chaos in its Technicolor swirls. Finally, a series of monochrome inkblot compositions captures the various stages of dissociation, the works coexisting as pieces of a larger puzzle that together, reflect the tenor of the artist’s daily struggles.
