Event Description

SOHO2O Chelsea Gallery is a non-profit artist-run gallery that has been promoting the work of women artists through gallery exhibition and public programming since 1973. In conjunction with SOHO20’s ongoing mission to support the production and presentation of new work, the 3-month Studio Residency Program was implemented to provide visual arts, of any gender, with the space and community necessary to create, experiment and exchange ideas. With a focus on studio-based practice, the residency is an opportunity to develop a new body of work while engaging with the diverse SOHO20 artist members, as well as the surrounding New York arts scene.

The studio space is offered at no charge to the artist for a three-month period (May - August, 2014). It is located at 547 West 27th Street within SOHO20 gallery, in the heart of Chelsea. The interior private space measures 26’ x 9’. The studio has 13’ ceilings; over 40’ of workable wall space and is semi furnished with storage units and worktable. It is accessible 24/7. The gallery and studio is housed in a contemporary art center among other commercial and non-profit galleries and organizations.

Note that the studio residency at 547 W. 27th Street is a work space only. There is absolutely no living allowed.

The artist will be promoted through an individualized distributed postcard, as well as visibility on the SOHO20 website and email newsletters that reach 8,000+ viewers. Artists have the option to participate in Open Studios in conjunction with well-attended monthly gallery receptions. Artists may also use their residency for salons or talks in order to share their work with the greater general public. Gallery administrative staff can be available to facilitate coordinating studio visits with gallerists, critics and curators upon request. The studio’s proximity to one of New York’s major cultural hubs makes it convenient to experience esteemed exhibitions throughout the neighborhood, and readily gains exposure to an international contemporary art scene.

Online Applications must be submitted by Friday, April 25, 2014 before midnight.  All applicants will receive notification via email at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the residency.  Please do not contact the gallery to check on the status of your application.
