Rules of Success: What Is Allowed---and What do We Allow Ourselves?
With artists Elizabeth Michelman, Fran Bull, Barbara Rehg, and Nelleke Nix
In conjunction with Hungry Eyes, a June-July exhibition by Soho20’s National Affiliate Artists, Boston critic Elizabeth Michelman conducts an open conversation with fellow exhibitors about female artists' ongoing struggle for self-possession. Through poetry, fiction, and visual art, four artists, curators, and writers ask how women artists can more effectively engage with authority and challenge disempowerment through art.
Moderated by Elizabeth Michelman
Fran Bull, painter and sculptor, presents drawings from her recent artist’s book, Transition and reminisces about her art world journey from gallery acceptance as a photorealist painter to a psychological exploration of feminine experience and expressive impulse.
Nelleke Nix, writer and painter, reads her short-short stories and critiques women artists’ ambivalence toward asserting their own social power of self-definition.
Elizabeth Michelman, writer, videographer, and visual artist, presents recent poems and discusses the use of conscious and unconscious strategies in interdisciplinary process
Barb Rehg, 2D artist, Soho20 NA member and WCAGA Exhibit chair and board member, will discuss the perceptual aspects of women artists encountering and overcoming external and internal barriers to making self relevant art.
